Car Seat Safety 101: What Every Parent Should Know

Here’s what every parent and caregiver should know:

✅ 1. Always Follow Manufacturer Guidelines

Each car seat has different weight, height, and installation requirements. Make sure you:

• Read the manual thoroughly

• Register your seat for safety recalls

• Check expiration dates (yes, car seats expire!)

🛑 2. Never Use a Car Seat After an Accident

Even if the damage isn't visible, the safety integrity may be compromised. After a crash—even a minor one—replace the seat unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.

👶 3. Keep Children Rear-Facing As Long As Possible

Rear-facing seats offer the best protection for your child’s head, neck, and spine. The AAP recommends rear-facing until at least age 2, or until your child outgrows the seat's height/weight limits.

🔒 4. Tight Installation is Critical

A properly installed car seat should not move more than an inch from side to side. Always:

• Use either LATCH or the seat belt, but not both (unless the manual allows it)

• Make sure straps are snug: no twists, and the "pinch test" should pass

❄️ 5. No Puffy Coats in the Car Seat

Bulky clothing creates extra space between the harness and your child. Use a thin fleece jacket and cover with a blanket over the straps for warmth.

🧽 6. Clean… but Safely

We love a fresh, clean seat—but never remove or soak harness straps, as it can weaken their integrity. Let the pros (like us!) clean safely without compromising the seat's safety features.
